January 31, 2010 The Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” In today’s Gospel, people didn’t recognize Jesus as anyone more than just a Nazarean like them. He was merely the son of Joseph. Like Jesus, some people don’t get recognized. Recently more than 1,000 folks hurried past the world famous violinist Joshua Bell without even looking up. Bell was participating in an experiment where he played as a street musician during commuter rush at the entrance to a Washington subway station. The cheap seats at his concerts can cost $100, and his 45-minute subway performance could have commanded $75,000 in a concert hall. He got $32 in donations. At the end of Bell’s subway performance he took the money out of his instrument case and replaced it with his $3.5 million Stradivarius violin.
