January 17, 2010 The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Timing is everything. Jesus was waiting for a sign from the Spirit to begin his ministry. He went to a wedding at Cana with his disciples and his mother, who noticed that the young couple had run out of wine. She told Jesus about it. At first he said, “My time has not come.” But she knew better. The time of need is the time to act. Jesus recognized in his mother’s compassion the sign from the Spirit that it was time to begin his ministry, and got to work. We may be tempted to hold back, to wait for better timing to begin our full Christian discipleship. But God’s call will come when we see others in need. That’s the time to begin.
