In the gospel today we meet a man described as having an unclean spirit. He makes an outburst at the synagogue in Capernaum, just as Jesus has concluded preaching.
We seldom encounter situations like this in our modern world, but if we did, we might decide that the person was suffering from schizophrenia. The man in the Gospel appears to be deluded, thinking that Jesus has come to destroy him. Just as Jesus cured the physical conditions of cripples, lepers, and blind men, he cures themental illness of this man in today’s Gospel. Jesus orders the evil spirit to come out of him. But the man is not delusional when he declares that Jesus is the Holy One of God, he is prophetic. He sees that Jesus came to destroy the evil in us so that we can be reborn as children of love.

The term “Ordinary Time” may be misleading. In the context of the liturgical year the term “ordinary” does not mean “usual or aberage.” Ordinary here means “not seasonal.” Ordinary Time is that part of the Liturgical Year that lies outside the seasons of Lent-Easter and Advent-Christmas. In Ordinary Time, the Church celebrates the mystery of Christ not in one specific aspect but in all its aspects. The readings during the liturgies of Ordinary Time help to instruct us on how to live out our Christian faith in our daily lives.

During Ordinary Time the readings are not chosen according to a theme. Rather, they present in a continuous fashion, the life and work of Jesus Christ as proclaimed in the Gospels of either Matthew, Mark, or Luke. John’s Gospel is read principally during the liturgical seasons.

The Liturgical color for Ordinary Time is green, a sign of hope.

In the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, “South Pacific”, the characters sing, “Some Enchanted Evening, you will see a stranger, you will see a stranger, across a crowded room.” They lyric continues that “you know,” even then, that he is the one. It concludes, “Once you have found him, never let him go.”
Such was the case for the disciples. Their lyrics could say: “One enchanted afternoon, the fishermen saw a stranger. They saw him from across the water, and he invited them to follow him. And somehow they knew, even then. Once they had found him, they never let him go.”
In our busy lives, we may be like the fishermen. When Jesus comes passing by, and when he calls to us, may we have the gift to know and to follow.

In the 40′s frenzied bobby soxers screamed themselves into hysteria at the sight of the young singer Frank Sinatra. In the 60′s, it was Beatlemania as the rock group from England toured the United States. These days, another generation falls into a frenzy at the sight of teen idols like Justin Bieber.
The pope is not a rock star, but he causes major excitement, too. At the recent World Youth Days in Cologne, Sydney, and Madrid, the sight of the pope unleashed tremendous energy and enthusiasm from the young people.
The Gospel story’s encounter with Jesus did not take place in a stadium. It was in the quiet village of Bethany on a sleepy afternoon. Instead of great crowds, there were only John the Baptist and two future disciples. Still, the encounter unleashed the same energy, excitement, and enthusiasm. The disciples ran after Jesus, calling out his name.
