Pastor's Message:
4TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

ORDINARY TIME

Pope Benedict XVI recently commented to one of his priests to leave “I” behind and enjoy the freedom of “we.”  He commented on how the whole of Vatican II Council was focused on moving away from the idea of individual spirituality.  Our spirituality has to be centered on each other!  It’s that very point that planted the seed for me to enter Diaconate study.  I remember like yesterday being in Church and realizing the importance of community.  Left alone I was usually discouraged by weakness and lack of direction.  But when I was gathered with others in any expression of love, joy, faith, hope, friendship, mourning…without doubt, there was always a sense of being, feeling, accomplishment, purpose, satisfaction, life…And one day, in the most important gathering of all, the celebration of the Eucharist, Jesus called me to consummate that commitment to service, by pursuing clerical ministry.

It’s a tall order to lose the word “I” and focus on “We.”  However, the concept certainly compliments scripture.  Our commitment to Jesus by serving the least of His brethren is our primary spiritual focus.  It’s a prescription that cures shaky friendships, strengthens marriages, makes for healthier children, the list goes on and on.  We no longer act for ourselves, but our actions are for the nourishment of others.

Regardless of your vocation, the most gratifying effect of all from a life of service is its liberating effect.  There’s such freedom in living life for others.  There’s no deceptions, no wonder.  Expectations are focused on heaven, so hurt and confusion are gone.  Start small, start at home.  I’m reminded of a recent article Mr. Floyd Gautreaux, St. Joseph Parishioner, wrote on joy.  In it he so eloquently articulated the rewards experienced by those who focus on bringing joy to others.  He said, regardless of the circumstances do your best to bring joy to others, even if it’s as simple as smiling and greeting a perfect stranger.  The true recipient of joy is you!
