FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
World War II General Douglas MacArthur is remembered for his famous parting words spoken in 1942 as he evacuated the Philippine Islands. He said, “I shall return.” We also hear this in today’s Gospel. Jesus tells us, “I will come again and I will take you to myself.” MacArthur kept his promise. Addressing the soon to be liberated Filipino people, he said, “The guidance of divine God points the way. Follow in His name to the Holy Grail of righteous victory!”
When Jesus returns for us, we won’t need such inspiring rhetoric. All we will need is his familiar and simple: “Come, Follow Me.”
