21ST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

In today’s Gospel, Jesus gives the disciples an opportunity to quit when he asks them, “Do you also wish to go away?”

We quit a lot of things. As adults, some of us have quit smoking or drinking. Some of us have quit our jobs to strike out in a new career.

In most of these situations, we had an alternative. Smoking or drinking were exchanged for health; in our careers, we had the choice of another job. We usually had someplace else to go.

The disciples, having seen the promise of Jesus, truly have no place left to go. They can’t quit Jesus. He is the only game in town.
