BAPTISM OF THE LORD
January 10, 2010 Baptism of the Lord
Baptism is the third welcoming ceremony for a newborn child. The first was at birth, when the parents embraced the new child into their lives. The second was when the rest of the family greeted their newest member. The third is the rite of baptism when the child becomes part of the larger church family. It is always a joyful experience when a baptism takes place, especially if the entire family is present. Today’s Gospel tells us that Jesus’ heavenly Father was there at Jesus’ baptism. When Jesus had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and a dove descended. The Father spoke: “You are my own dear Son and I am pleased with you.”
