PENTECOST
We’ve all been warned to be careful what we ask for, because we just might get it. A birthday cartoon shows a woman blowing out the candles on her cake. She makes her wish: “I wish that I would stop aging.” The next frame shows her splayed out on the floor, dead in an instant.
Pentecost has been called “the birthday of the church.” It comes 50 days after Easter and celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the church and upon us. While we open our hearts to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, instead of praying we’ll stop aging, let us pray instead that we all grow in age and grace.
