FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Have you heard the joke about the doctor who completed a man’s examination despite the incessant chattering of the man’s wife? Afterward, he called the wife aside for a private talk. The doctor told her, “Your husband needs rest and peace. Here are some sleeping pills.” Concerned, the wife asked, “When should I give them to him?” The doctor explained, “They’re for you.” In the Gospel today, Jesus invites all who are weary and find life burdensome to be refreshed. The husband in the story may be weary from carrying the heavy burden of a partner who never stops talking. For some, the burden may be their own inability to stop talking long enough to hear a response. Whatever burdens we bear, Jesus invites us to rest. He tells us that his yoke is easy and his burden is light.
